The Blogroll Debate Continues…What are your thoughts?
After a slightly longer than planned Christmas break I’m back.
I did intend to be back to work much sooner . But after one too many comments from friends and family that the best way to get my attention would be to leave a comment on my blog, I got the hint, LOL
It has been great spending sometime away from the PC and catching up with people. The downside is it’s always hard getting started again!
I have taken a quick look round other Alex Jeffreys students blogs and now feel a bit guilty. Some of you have written many posts since Christmas and I need to get back in gear.
Having said that, it has been quite interesting to take a back seat and just read other blogs..
One topic that seems to be hotly debated is the use of the blogroll. The question had been raised during the last webinar by Joe Trueman that our lengthy blogrolls could cause us problems with Google. The reason being it could be viewed that we are trying to artificially increase our page ranks.
It’s not something I had considered but even the possibility should be taken seriously . The last thing any of us want after the all the hard work we have put in is to receive the dreaded Google slap!
In my quick trawl through some of the blogs, a few solutions have been offered.
JT Martin had a post about a ‘no follow’ plugin and this is a quick fix to the problem. This plugin gives you the option to set your outbound blogroll links as a ‘no follow’ link so they will not have an influence on the Google page rank.
Unfortunately for me, I stopped using the blogroll facility and placed all the links into a text widget a few weeks back. Seemed like a good idea at the time, If only I could remember why, lol. So to make use of this widget I will have to enter all the details back into the blogroll, what fun!
Dave Dunn has solution that I also quite like. He has set up a RSS feed that will show subscribed students latest posts. He also has a recent comments widget. The benefit of this solution is that those who are active will still feature on his blog.
I sure you have all read Garry Parkes post about his blogroll dilemma and it is something I can definitely relate to. I have over 150 students listed and it is getting to the unmanageable point. I know Garry is trying to work out some sort of ‘scoring’ system for who should be included, but as I posted in my comment to his thread, this could become time consuming. I don’t know about you but I find there are not enough hours in the day already.
All this debate about blogrolls and who should be on them and where doesn’t surprise me. I think the real question being asked is the value of the blogroll and the community itself. The stage is fast approaching now that our future success lies in how much we are doing outside our community, not just in it. I know that this question is occupying many , I have had many emails on the subject.
Whether you are on someones blogroll or not, that is not going to be the key factor in your success. Part of our traffic generation plan should be to actively engage with other marketers outside the Alex Jeffreys coaching program. Predominately via their blogs and forums. Do we add all of them to the blogroll, should they add us to theirs?
Yes, it’s a silly question but it does make me think that the whole blogroll situation is taking up more of our time and focus than it deserves.
That is of course just my opinion, I maybe wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time! Lol.
What do you feel about the blogroll, it‘s benefits and criteria for being included?
I would love to hear you thoughts.

Hi Mark,
Very eloquently put and I agree with all you said. And I notice that you are back on my blog while I am here on yours right at this very moment in cyber-time.
I have to say that this Google slap is probably coming. They like dropping the guillotine as they see fit. Coz they are Google and thay can do what they want and stuff anyone who doesn’t like it.
My blogeroo, as I call it, is VERY convenient for me coz I use it like a kangaroo to hop around the “oil rigs.” And on that score, Mark, let me say this… some oil rigs are gushers and some are pumping about as much oil as an old 1905 Singer Sewing machine. You know, one of those old treadly ones like Great Grandma used to peddle when she was darning Great Grandpa’s sox before WW1.
Jeez, seriously, I’d find more oil underneath a brand new car on the showroom floor of the local motor vehicle dealership than on some of these blogs. Cop that!
I just answered you Mark over at Gary-Land and part of what I said I’m gonna copy and drop below coz this is my summation of what I am seeing:
Gee, almost, but not quite, a rant Mark. You gotta be careful of the mood I’m in when you invite me over mate! LOL!
Gazza often comes with ammunition. It’s midnight over here in Oz and here I am, still at it. Let’s put it down to that. Reckon I’m convincing anyone?

Hey Garry,
I invite you for your rants, lol. They make my day, the oil stuff was very funny but a serious point too. I have already left a reply to your comment above on your blog so it looks like blog tennis for us again. What is the score, lol?
Mark
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your post, I have been checking out other way’s of trying to get traffic to my blog.
The blogroll debate will I’m sure go on for some time unless as you say Google takes action, my only concern is does it affect SEO when you have such a big blogroll?
I know 2 gurus who say you should delete it in one of their ebooks.
Best wishes for the New Year (still wondering were this one’s gone):-)

Mark,
The score is 2 all and I’m going to bed dude. It’s after midnight here in Perth. And I am dead dog tired. I’ve been pumping a bunch of tires up on a lot of blogs today and I also managed to get all my work accounts up to date. I have been burning the turf all day since about 5.30am.
It’s been a gas.

PS: Just managed to instal that Akismet plug-in coz I didn’t have an API key. Just got one. I am SICK and bloody TIRED of all these spam a**wipes who are pounding my blogsite with pedophile and lolita GARBAGE. I swear, I’d like to punch them right in their dopey faces. And I would too if I could just sent a bunch of fives down the line.
Gary SIMPSON’s last blog post..Internet Marketing - the People You Meet and the Books You Read…
Hey Mark
Really great post here and one I’m up for debating about the blog roll. I recently recieved a few blog roll request studnets who gave me links directly linking to their website. I instead did a bit of searching around and managed to get to the ir blogs instead and link my blog roll links to blogs instead. I think it was very cheeky of them of asking me to directly link my blog roll to their Profit Pulling sites.
I guess, the blog roll is useful for yourself to keep in contact with others and also by having a link back it may help to generate traffic to your own site.
I did check out Dave Dunn’s blog earlier about the RSS idea, I think it’s great but again, like you said, is it worth the effort considering that we probably make most of our money out of the community? It’s a very hard decision to make, I guess my verdict currently is stick with it or do what other students do and that is to stick the blog roll on a new sub page or maybe find out if anyone can do a drop down menu.
I think the latter approach maybe be something worthwhile. Speak laters and all the best
Nigel
Hi Mark,
Thanks for visiting my blog…I am glad you’re back.
Regarding blogroll discussion, to be honest I am trying to become more active outside the students circle and dont have time to visit every single blog. I have 15 -20 blogs that I visit very frequently and I am learning from these people and sometimes they learn something from me..and I am happy with that. I will soon cut my blogroll to maybe 25 links and I am sure I will add some that I feel should be on my blogroll.
In the same time I offered my help to anyone few times but only couple of people came back to me.
I installed nofollow the other day as per Google possible problems, this could become serious issue.
I just wanted to point something out, when I view your blog and mineas well ( same theme)from 15″ size laptop screen, the right sidebar (tweet my blog in particular) is running over the blog edge.I have asked the theme creator for the solution and will let you know.
That’s it for now.

Hi Al,
Thanks for stopping by, and yes, where did the past year go!LOL
Well there seem to be many who do think it effects SEO so it should be taken seriously. I will let you know what I decide to do.
Mark
Hi Nigel,
Good to hear from you and your views on this debate. A seperate page or drop down menu is a good idea, these will still need to be ‘no follow’ links to avoid the google problem. I’m sure as time goes by it will become less of an issue. As you say and I mention in my post it’s a big world out there and that is where we need to start making our mark.
Speak soon
Mark
Hi Gordon,
It’s good to be back!
Great reply and I think you are on the right track. It’s great to see you are being active outside the community and IMHO this is essential if we are going to see success.
I’m doing my best to visit as many blogs as possible but as you point out it is very time consuming. You tactic of focusing on a certain number that you feel offers value is a good point.
Thanks for pointing out that issue with the theme, let me know when you hear back, much appreciated.
Mark
Hi Mark! You have a great website!
I have been reading about this debate to blog roll or not to blog roll with great interest. I haven’t started one yet on my website just for this reason. I know one person was talking about making a page just for the blog roll and that seems like a very good idea. I might do that.
Have a great New Year! and see you in the webinar!

Hi Mr. “Special Forces”,
Welcome back! And nice one Mark, the Disney JV video was a brilliant.
Most of all, a BIG thank you for all you have helped me along with to date. You are a real star!
I am watching closely as to the Blog roll issue, and weighing options. To add to Gary’s comments above, I believe there are some of our Tribe that we each feel an affinity with individually, and believe fits with each of us synergistically. These will likely end up as JV partners down the line. (Those that leave a link to their PPP on blogs are another sort altogether.)
I will be checking back in to see what developments here..

hey nark-
thanks for your comments on my blog. i have some opinions on the issue. since day 1 alex praised i think it was garry for having his blogroll up and running. i think since then everyone has been running to get theres like garry’s (me included). but trying to keep up with all of it is impossible. i knwo that i am very much behind, but i do not want to spend all my time adding students to my blogroll. it is nice to have them in one place where i can click on who’s i want to go to, but the upkeep is difficult. so i don’t know how much it is of benefit.
the other thing…. i understand what garry is saying about some of them are not active. i have been on some posts and have been the first one to post and their last blog was weeks ago. now i don’t know if i’m on garry’s top 20-25 list, problaby not, but i have been staying active in working on my blog and trying to keep up with others blogs. but when you look at the long list, you can spend a full day just visiting everyone’s blog and not get anything else done. that is just with the students blogs.
so i don’t know what i think about the blogroll of students, only to make me think “why do i have one on my blog” there are a few as garry said that i would like to keep, but the rest can go. i certainly do not want to get in trouble with google.
anyway i wanted to stop by and say thanks for helping me out, and i will try to get some more ebooks added to my free stuff.
thanks again

sorry about spelling your name wrong. typo…
anyway i forgot to mention about need ing your help as well as the help of the other students.
i have set up a new review site and i need comments, posts, and reviews from all students. i have been working on it, and then started thinking about what alex said about oursourcing. instead of me trying to review all the products myself, which is time consuming, i thought i would enlist the help of the other studenst. so i am asking you to visit the site and if you are familiar with any of the products or are using them to make a quick comment, post, or review. this would increase the value of the site as well as give you shine your name in lights as well.
if you have a product that you would like for me to add, just go to me blog and follow the instructions and i will review it, rate it and add it.
i would be very greatful for your help.
thank you.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for stopping by and posting a comment. I think you said it best when you said we are probably spending too much time with our own community blogrolls and may not be spending enough time in conversing with marketers outside our community. I know this is an area I need to focus on.

Hi Mandy,
Thanks for popping over and great comments. If your focus has been on your blog and not so much on others I can say it has paid off. Look at your blog now and what you are doing. I think your progress has been amazing.
It is impossible to visit every blog and as you rightly point out, is this the best use of your time?
Yes, hi nark…that’s nice I thought, LOL
Will take a look at your review site and will help any way I can.
I’m taking a guess here but is this the Mile Filsaime Instant Affiliate site? If so, let me know what the monthly magazine is like

Hi Debbie
Happy New Year to you too!

Hey Mark,
Great post as I thought earlier and it’s certainly getting lots of hits… seems like this blog roll issue is going to be heated debate for the coming days if not weeks.
I’m also glad to see that Mandy has popped round to see you about the PDF issues, your much better than me at explaining tech things.
Oh btw, point of call, Mark, you know that internet explorer thing you were telling me about my blog and that the sidebar was stuck below the blog post, just figured out it was my screen issue. I switched from the my really old 15″ monitor to my little bor’s 17″ tft and it looked fine. I’m guessing it’s just the monitor size and resolution issue.
Another thing, have you thought about including a section on how to make folders and uploading PDF files for downloads in your ebook? It would be a great addition, plus the blog roll issue as well and solutions to solve it would be kool. Anyway just random suggestions
All the best and I’ll speak to you later
Nigel
Hey Mark,
You can fix your blog roll problem by adding rel=”nofollow” at the end of each “a href” tag. At the end of each url …….com” rel=”nofollow”>students name<then close “a” tag.
I had to write it like that or it will auto correct the html and make a link out of it.
I was a member of portal feeder for about 5 months. Jason and those guys really no there stuff. That is where I learned most of my SEO. I also use the Semiologic Pro theme and ask a lot of questions in their forum.
I would use the no follow on the blog roll. Did you realize that all of the links in your comments are no follow?
It is the Word Press default. There is a plugin called Dofollow that will remove this from your comments. I feel that commenters add value to your blog and therefore deserve some “link love”.
I am going to have to educate everyone on this matter and show them how to set this stuff up. There is an add on for Firefox called SEO Quake.
This is really powerful and adds a new dimension to your Google searches and lets you analyze any website you visit.
Set it up on Firefox, enable it, and then go to Google and search for anything. You’ll see what I mean. Come buy the blog in a day or so and I’ll have a video up about it.
JT Martin’s last blog post..Alex Jeffreys Coaching Is On Squidoo
Hey Mark and everyone, how u doing?
I am exhausted, it’s past 3 in the morning and I am trying to catch up after x-mas. When you have small kids you have no option but stop over the hollidays and then work like mad afterwards to try and compensate for it..
Anyway, interesting debate. I wasn’t very happy to beggin with to have a large blogroll on the site. I did because I felt it was adding value to the community but I also feared from the beggining from a different perspective.
Rich tought us on GPS about having a persona attached to your clients/viewers/readers and I have always done that as a tactic to write my posts and make it very personal. This target should have a name, age, character and as much info as you can add onto to make it real. So I did.
I have to personas I address in my blog and to be very honest my general public is the one I started with in mind. So I thought about this person coming to my blog and being as curious as I am when I surf around a new IM blog/site to suss the person behind and then I would find a huge blogroll of just students like my prospective (coach/mentor/marketer), which in this case is me, Sandra - you Mark and so on.
Then I would find out that every one of these students is offering exactly the same advice, life journal, PPP (free report). Of course we are hugely different therefore would offer the same things in different ways.
But do you follow my logic? Me, Sandra Rodrigues would be inclined not to join this opt-in, which in fact I just provided hundreds of exactly the same exclusive, time sensite, one time offer all over the hundreds sites on my blogroll.
Just another perspective to add salt and pepper to the confusion, as we say in Brazil. I don’t know how to solve it either but I can tell you that I am inclined to do a separate page for all the students and use my blogroll to recommend sites I feel are important to my followers and add value to them. Having said that there are quite a few FROM THE STUDENTS BLOGROLL that I would add to this valuable resource. Maybe the problem needs to be sorted in a natural, organic way. By writing here I am sort of deciding to go down that route.
I came here to let you guys know that in fact I have a new sort of list for us to have it and I am calling Tweeter Land Page.
The basic idea is to create massive buzz around what we are doing and generate great traffic trhough tweeter.
I have spent quite some time visiting everyone that posted a comment to me since the beggining with the intention of retrieving their addresses for the list but honestly I am shattered and I only went through 2 pages so far worth of comments.
Can I ask you guys to be very kind and pop over to send me your addresses, please? Some of the sites don’t make it obvious for us to get it, I had to keep cliking links to find out hte url, etc and as I said, I think I had enough for today.
If you guys can spread the word as well I would appreciate very much.
Lot’s of love,
Sandra

Hi Mark,
I’m happy you had a nice Christmas spent with “people”! So did I - I was unable to get near a computer most of the time!
Anyway, regarding the blogroll issue, would Austin Delaney’s automated blogroll list at http://www.workingwithalex.com work? Could we have just that one link on our sites where we could check out everyone’s blog posts, etc..?

Hi Mark
Wishing you a very happy and prosperous new year.
I hope your 2009 Internet business will give you everything you have ever dreamed of.
One Big Word Of Caution!
And PLEASE DONT JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS. I will try to back it up with some facts.
Unfortunately we are in a global financial situation none of us have ever seen before. You need to consider very carefully which currency you trade in. Then consider very carefully in which countries you bank and keep your money in. At the Moment experts are predicting the British pound and the American dollar both currencies are going to collapse within 2 years your £s and $s could very well be worthless in just a few months
I Hope I am talking a load of Rubbish.
But a FIAT based currency A DEBT economy in which we operate; in history has never lasted very long perhaps a 100 years. In other words, the bubble will always burst collapse is always inevitable. The amount of debt we have, makes it impossible to come back from. You Cannot Pay A Debt with a debt. It’s Impossible.
But first watch a couple of experts tell you how they see the future, forewarned is forearmed and I would suggest taking this into consideration so you can position yourself into the right financial position.
At the moment our politicians US & UK are the last people to listen to. They are basically saying anything that keeps the people quiet. They are telling us what they want us to hear.
I could keep writing for ages about FIAT currency, debt money, Offshore Banking, Tax havens etc but to give you an idea so you can judge for yourself go to my blog http://daveorchard.com click on the header WHERE’S YOUR MONEY GONE? And watch the program. Please leave a comment this can be good or bad this is something we are all in together, and there are millions of other people that will be effected and will need our help.
We are in a global business so we bank global, live global, for our own benefit.
Best Regards
DaveO
Dave Orchard’s last blog post..Where’s Your Money Gone?
Hello Mark
Well you have definitely found a way to draw comments to your blog. Kudos on that.
I find having a large blog roll for all the student is ridiculous… it is bulky, intimidating and not the focus of my blog. I have copied Tim Buttles page as a resource to find other students.
I am turning the blog roll I have on my blog home page into a list of those I have the most contact with. I plan to keep it close to my top ten.
I think the important key to keep in mind is good quality posts and comments are more important than the blog roll. I feel ultimately, if you can do a good job on those it will make up for any loss due to not having a blog roll.
Good stuff here. Thanks!!

I don’t think it’s that complicated. Clearly if you add the name of every student to your blogroll you’re going to be penalised.
But if you add students who are posting unique quality materials that Google likes, then they’ll probably like you too.
As for unique quality material have you seen this yet?

Hey Mark
Thanks for giving my solution a mention.
Infact it was inspired by Austin Delaneys site. The only problem I had with using Austins site is that I wanted something directly on my page that would have the same effect. It’s simply a matter of timesaving.
I even tried to use the feed from http://workingwithalex.com/feed and embedding that in my sidebar. It does work, except any link you click doesnt take you to related blog, but to Austins site.
That’s why I setup the feed with Yahoo Pipes. It may have taken me all day, but the work is done now. I’m finding it very effective too. It’s keeping me active with peoples blogs when I wasn’t posting on some before as they were at the bottom of the list.
Now it’s whoever has posted that day I can click straight to the blog and leave a comment. And it keeps updating itself automatically. It works for me anyway.
Wishing everyone a happy new year!!

Dave Dunn’s last blog post..The Blog Roll Issue - A Possible Solution
Hi Mark. I have been in the SEO business since 2000. Google may ignore the no-follow rule but will find the list. Other search engines do not take any notice of the no-follow rule and will take notice, pick-up their skirts and run.
If Google get nasty they don’t just ban your site(s) but everything you may have to do with Google. Your analytics, adword account, adsense account and any use of any other Google product. It recently happened to a highflyer who ran her business using Google Word etc - they will not give her access to anything, even her address book or mail. They don’t have to give a reason.
I am also horrified that one member is putting duplicate messages on sites to get round to them all.
Even a sentence linked to names on a blogroll will up the chance of getting hit. No Google no game.
We should be taking advice from experts - which is no Blogroll. We should NOT all be writing about the same person - does that not seem a little like duplication to you. We are starting to look like a blog farm. That is about as nasty as you can get and we WILL be done. I have decided that I will probably get hammered if Google come along although I have tried to avoid everything mentioned above. That will put ME out of business. I survive on 3 No 1 sites in Google for different subjects - one being a client site.
What we are doing is unheard of apart from the 30 Day Challenge who Google have had enough of and made them make it a closed paid-for community as it was free for 3 years. They also lost their blog farm because someone told Google (allegedly).
It is time Alex came back with some advice. He said he would before Christmas.
We need a lot more quality relevant articles on what we are trying to do for ourselves and far less repeating of words and phrases. If Google hit you will get no warning and never get back in. If my website is on your blogroll with a link, please take it off. My income is at stake here.
We need urgent guidance from Alex on SEO. All I have had is a request to vote for him on Twitter. We are paying for this aren’t we?
Di

Hi Di,
Congratulations on being the first person in the short history of our blogs to be asked to be taken off a blog roll,LOL
Seriously though, you have made some very good points and the fact you have asked to be removed shows how important this issues is.
I bow to your experience of 8yrs in SEO and we all need advice from people such as yourself.
Maybe you can get on the next webinar and raise the issue with Alex?
All the best
Mark
Hi Mark
This is what I’ve noticed thus far, the blog roll (on it’s own page) has given me several backlinks on Google and a better ranking. For a few of my targeted keywords, I’m within the top 10. I can’t say it’s all because of the blog roll, but I did notice a bump when I changed from the homepage long list to posting a link on my homepage to my blog roll page.
If any of the F-500 are interested, I did make a few copy/paste options for anyone to use on their blogs. You can find the link on my blogroll page.
Tim Buttles
Hi Tim
Just took a look at your site, love the blog roll layout and have taken full advantage of your offer.
Well done for setting up the option of copying your blog roll, outstanding effort, keep up the great work!
Mark
Any time Mark
BTW - I think your blog looks great and I like the 3 column layout!
Tim
Hi Mark,
Wow, you have tons of information. I had no idea that there was an issue with the blogs. I actually cut and pasted all of your work onto a page on my site. (I hope that’s okay, let me know if it’s not). Has anyone had an issue with the blog rolls or is it one of those rumour things like “hotmail will shut down your e-mail unless you send a message to everyone on your list in 3 seconds”?
I noticed that my name is on your blog roll but the link is not. When you have some time, will you add it please? Unless there is some real issue that will affect all this, then don’t worry about it
I can’t believe you feel guilty for taking some time off! You have so much stuff going on. I compare my site to yours sometimes and freak out!
Keep up the great work, and thank you!

Hi Sarah
I hope you had a good time in Cuba, I bet you did
This is a real issue and as you see I have changed my blog roll set up. Sorry you link is not working and I will get that fixed. No problem cut&pasting it, glad to help. Don’t freak out, your site is getting there. There are others I visit that make me feel the same way too!

Hi Mark,
Rummaging through the various contributions to the big blogroll debate, I think there is a blog post that should be read by all of AJ’s students and the salutory lesson taken on board. Whether we get slapped or not (and no-one wants to be of course), we are seeking, nay, needing to attract traffic, and so we need to be found, don’t we?
Read Jey Kumara’s article on how he went from being on page 2 to page 39, and back again when he installed NoFollow.

I have been getting to know my AJ family, and now it is time to fly the nest. External links will be our routes to monetization so I’d better stop being a busy fool, and get down to the real work. (Not to minimise what we are doing within our community, but there are only so many hours in the day, and I have to wise up or bail out. I know which way I am going.)
To everyone’s success.

Hey Valerie,
I just read Jey’s post. I have uploaded the no-follow plugin so that should help. I have also moved the blog roll onto a seperate page. That is not just to do with this issue, more the amount of space it was taking on my front page!
As for flying the nest….couldn’t agree more.
All the best
Mark
